Proper punching techniques increase your power

Odds are, you’re not punching anywhere near as powerfully as you could be if you were using proper punching techniques.

What feels right to a novice fighter isn’t necessarily what will get him to the next level and allow him to beat other skilled fighters. In fact, one of the biggest difficulties facing beginning boxers is unlearning bad habits and retraining themselves using proper punching techniques instead of wild, swinging punches.

Guide to learning proper punching techniques

  1. Start by limiting yourself to long-range, straight punches. The jab and the straight right hand need to be perfect before you move on.
  2. Always step with a power punch. Get your body weight behind your fist for power punching.
  3. Twist with the punch. This pivot adds power and speed.
  4. Always remember that proper punching technique incorporates defense within each punch. Don’t neglect your defense just to get more power.

If you are not familiar with the proper way to throw your punches with maximum power and minimum risk to yourself, it’s a good idea to get some expert instruction. There are plenty of places online where you can get good quality, inexpensive lessons. Or, if you live near a boxing gym, even a single lesson with a qualified trainer will certainly help.
